Wow factor

David Joles, Dml - Star Tribune

Simley coaches and wrestlers were joyous after heavyweight Charlie Gelhaye scored a pin against his Perham opponent, giving Simley the Class 2A championship at the wrestling state tournament at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Gelhaye pinned his opponent as the Spartans won the championship match 30-28.

The high school sports version of March Madness -- a whirlwind six weeks that actually started in mid-February -- has come and gone. With the rapid-fire pace of the tournament season, the chance to reflect on the whole process is sometimes lost. So we thought we would try to tie a bow around the frenzy with a look back at some of the tremendous highs of the winter sports tournament season.

From section final showdowns (Minnetonka 74, Hopkins 71, OT, boys' hoops) to state tournament classics (Edina 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, OT, boys' hockey Class 2A semifinals), great games and moments dominated the stretch. It's impossible to list each one, but suffice to say that any year that features a heavyweight helping his team win a wrestling state title with a pin in the championship match (Simley's Charlie Gelhaye), a girls' basketball player breaking the state tournament single-game scoring record (Brittany Chambers, Jordan, 47 points) and a boys' basketball player breaking the all-time state scoring record at the state tournament, then winning a title (Cody Schilling, Ellsworth), is a great one.

And where did Schilling break that record? Mariucci Arena, of course! (Upon learning that some state boys' basketball tournament games would be held at Mariucci, a common reaction was this: "Huh? You mean Williams Arena, don't you?" After two days of games at the home of the Gophers men's hockey team, one fact stood out: Mariucci is a great place for basketball.)

It's been a fun ride. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
