Panthers top Bears

Recap: Nate Howard, a 6-1 junior guard averaging 11.1 points per game, scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the first half to help the Panthers outlast the previously unbeaten Bears.

Turning point: Bertha-Hewitt, which trailed by 12 points at halftime, pulled within three (47-44) with 11 minutes, 50 seconds remaining. But the Panthers responded with a 19-9 run -- fueled by 15 points from Joel and Nate Salscheider -- over the next 5:20 to take a 66-53 lead with 6:30 remaining.

Noteworthy: The Panthers (28-3) outscored the Bears 7-0 -- including a three-pointer from Howard -- over the final 79 seconds of the half to open a 42-30 lead at halftime. "We wanted a double-digit lead at the half. It's not insurmountable, but it's a plus," said Ninham. Howard was 6-for-7 from the field in the first half. Joel Salscheider scored 22 points and Nate Salscheider added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers. .... Marcus Riewer scored 27 points to lead the Bears (28-1).
