Warriors' size inside wears out Hawks
Time will tell if Henry Sibley junior forward Mike Bruesewitz will be glad for what he wished for.
After scoring a team-high 18 points in the Warriors' 68-52 victory over Robbinsdale Cooper in the Class 4A semifinals Thursday at Target Center, Bruesewitz said the Warriors are looking forward to playing top-seeded Minnetonka for the state championship.
"I wouldn't want it any other way,'' said the 6-7 Bruesewitz, who has committed to Wisconsin. "If we want to be considered the best, we have to beat the best."
On Thursday, Sibley had too much size and overall talent for Cooper, which was led by Rodney Williams Jr. with 26 points. The Warriors outrebounded the Hawks 46-24. Bruesewitz had 16 rebounds, including eight on offense.
Cooper trailed 36-26 at halftime but used a 13-2 run early in the second half to take a 39-38 lead. But the Warriors went on a run of their own to put the game away.
Sibley outscored Cooper 25-5 over a eight-minute stretch to open up a 20-point lead with two minutes to play.
"Our guys were really able to rebound the basketball and we started to get stops defensively," Sibley coach Tom Dasovich said. "It was a great run. Marcus Garcia, big No. 55, came off the bench and really ran the floor. He's got great feet and soft hands. He sparked our momentum."
Garcia, a burly 6-5 senior center, scored six points during the Warriors' run and was strong on the glass.
"We call him the 'Dancing Bear,''' Bruesewitz said of Garcia, who finished with 12 points. "He was big on the glass. He's got baby-soft hands."
