4A: St. Cloud Tech 79, Cambridge-Isanti 68

Last update: March 26, 2008 - 11:27 PM

Tech rides Wolters to win

Recap: Junior guard Nate Wolters scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second half for the fourth-seeded Tigers as they gradually pulled away from the Bluejackets. Collin Stinogel (16) and Alex Hanks (11) also scored in double figures for the Tigers, who shot 52 percent from the field.

Turning point: With St. Cloud Tech leading 38-30 early in the second half, Wolters' three-pointer ignited a 28-11 run that put the game away. Wolters had 11 points during the stretch, capping it with another three-pointer that made it 66-41 with 6:46 to play. "We got a little sloppy in the second half at times," Cambridge-Isanti coach Mike McDonald said.

The quote: "I was nervous -- more than I normally am. That should be over with now." -- St. Cloud Tech coach Randy Jordan, whose squad hadn't qualified for state since 1983.

Noteworthy: Chadd Mathson led all scorers with 23 points (in 23 minutes) for Cambridge-Isanti, while Braden Johnson added 15. Johnson, a slight 5-9 junior guard, went 6-for-11 from the field by using a variety of floaters and tough jumpers. "He put on 10 pounds this year, and that brought him up to 135," McDonald said. "He's the king of the floaters." ... St. Cloud Tech emptied its bench at the end of the game and wound up using 17 players.
