2A: Maple River 64, Montivideo 53

Last update: March 26, 2008 - 11:34 PM

Defense does it

Recap: Maple River coach Tim Anderson takes a lot of pride in defense. He was all smiles after the Eagles (28-1) put the clamps on a Montevideo squad that averaged nearly 78 points per game.

Turning point: Senior guard Logan Drager provided the knockout punch, draining a three-pointer that gave the Eagles a 44-40 lead with 11:31 remaining. Montevideo, which had just trimmed a 10-point deficit to one on a layup by Todd Bergeson, got no closer than four the rest of the way. Drager finished with a game-high 19 points.

The quote: "That was ugly offense, but our defense came through for us. Our defense is our bread and butter." -- Anderson

Noteworthy: The Eagles have had a tough time getting out of the gate in the state tournament the past three years. It was no different against Montevideo (27-5), which scored eight of the first 11 points. During its runner-up finish a year ago, Maple River had to come from behind to beat Braham 68-59 in the quarterfinals and got off to a slow start against Holy Family in the finals before falling 60-57 in overtime.
