Boys' basketball: 10 things to know about 4A

The big-school tournament has something for every prep basketball fan: teams with ongoing or reborn traditions, and players with defensive prowess and/or offensive firepower.

Last update: March 26, 2008 - 12:16 AM

1. Top-seeded Minnetonka, making its fourth tournament appearance, has squeezed a lot out of its previous three. The Skippers won state titles in 1965 and 1998 and were runners-up in 1999.

2. Of Minnetonka's three losses, only one has been to a Minnesota team, Hopkins. The Skippers have lost to Los Angeles Campbell Hall and Madison (Wis.) Memorial and defeated Hopkins twice after losing to the Royals.

3. Tarell Clark, Burnsville's leading scorer, generates much of his offense through his defense. He has 108 steals and is the school's career leader in the category.

4. Henry Sibley is impressive just entering the gym. The Warriors have six players on the roster who are 6-5 or taller, including 6-11 Jake Kreuser, 6-9 R.J. Lennon and 6-8 Chris Halvorsen.

5. Check out some of the colleges interested in Cooper shooting guard Rodney Williams Jr.: Kansas, Miami (Fla.), Arizona, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue and Minnesota.

6. Among the other Division I recruits in the field are Minnetonka teammates Anthony Tucker (Iowa) and C.J. Erickson (Evansville), Henry Sibley's Mike Bruesewitz (Wisconsin in 2009) and Rochester Mayo's Lucas Kuipers (Rice).

7. St. Cloud Tech's success is a testament to the power of team play. All of the Tigers can handle the ball, they shoot 50 percent from the field and average 21 assists per game.

8. Cambridge-Isanti guard Braden Johnson averaged 13.2 points during the regular season but is averaging nearly 25 points in the postseason.

9. Cooper is back in the tournament for the second time in three years after not having qualified in the school's first 42 years of existence. The Hawks were Class 4A runners-up to Hopkins in 2006.

10. Bloomington Kennedy has been positively offensive during its current five-game winning streak, averaging 73.4 points per game. The Eagles had lost four of their previous five games before the streak, averaging 51.8 points.
