Mariucci Arena will feature baskets, not nets, this weekend

Last update: March 24, 2008 - 8:40 PM

Yes, basketball will be played at Mariucci Arena this week. The 10,000-seat home of the Gophers men's hockey team will be a basketball host for the first time in history when boys' state tournament quarterfinal games are held there Wednesday and Thursday.

Williams Arena is the usual place for quarterfinal games, but it is unavailable because it will be the site of a regional robotics competition sponsored by the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology. Confusion over the dates of the state tournament, which was delayed one week to avoid a conflict with Easter week, led to the change.

All four Class 2A quarterfinal games will be held at Mariucci on Wednesday, as will two 3A games. All quarterfinals in 1A will be played there Thursday. Semifinals and championship games in all four classes will be played at Target Center, beginning Thursday.
