1A final: St. Thomas Academy 5, Duluth Marshall 1

Last update: March 9, 2008 - 12:22 AM

1A FINAL AT A GLANCE

Recap: For the third time in the tournament, St. Thomas Academy had too much offensive firepower for its opponent, defeating Duluth Marshall 5-1. St. Thomas Academy scored 19 goals in the tournament.

The quote: "I'm so grateful -- most coaches just want to get here once, I don't deserve to be here twice. I'm just thankful." - Cadets co-head coach Greg Vannelli, on winning two titles in three years.

Unsung standouts: The Hilltoppers attempted 30 shots to the Cadets' 29, but only 14 reached the net -- in part because St. Thomas Academy blocked nine.

Noteworthy: This is the second time in three years that the Cadets beat the Hilltoppers in the state title game. ... Duluth Marshall is the first school in state history to lose three consecutive state championship games.

Three stars: 3) Ryan Walters, St. Thomas Academy -- scored once and set up his team's final goal with a great pass. 2) James Saintey, St. Thomas Academy -- scored two goals. 1) Christian Isackson, St. Thomas Academy --scored two goals -- their first, just 37 seconds into the game, and their fourth, effectively clinching the victory with six minutes remaining.
