Duluth Marshall 3, Warroad 1

Last update: March 7, 2008 - 9:06 PM

Erasing a bad memory

Recap: In late January, the Hilltoppers and the Warriors met in Warroad, and the game did not turn out well for Duluth Marshall. The Warriors scored twice in the final 16 seconds of the game to erase a 2-0 deficit, then won the game in overtime. In the Class 1A semifinals Friday, Duluth Marshall made sure there would be no repeat of that comeback, scoring a goal in each period and calmly withstanding Warroad's late flurry for a 3-1 victory. Zach Mausolf scored twice for the Hilltoppers.

The quote: "I won't lie to you, it did cross my mind." -- Hilltoppers coach Brendan Flaherty, on whether was thinking about the earlier game down the stretch in this one.

Unsung standout: Defenseman Dano Jacques made Duluth Marshall's second goal happen with a nice offensive move behind the Warroad net. "He's just a mainstay for us," Flaherty said.

Noteworthy: The Hilltoppers will play for the state championship for the third consecutive season; Duluth Marshall finished second in 2006 and 2007. ... Warroad will play in the third-place game for the second year in a row.

Three stars: 3) Tom Paine, Duluth Marshall -- Scored the first goal of the game, ending a spell of Warroad offensive pressure. 2) Zach Mausolf, Duluth Marshall -- His second goal, 15 seconds into the third period, took the wind out of the Warriors. 1) Willie Paul, Duluth Marshall -- Junior goaltender made 33 saves for the victory.
