Recap: The Cadets got on the board early and often, scoring 17 seconds into the first period on their way to a 9-2 victory over the Crusaders. St. Thomas Academy scored with three of its first four shots and four of its first seven. Eight of the nine Cadets goals came at even strength.
The quote: "That's an ideal situation, to score on your first shift." -- St. Thomas Academy co-head coach Greg Vannelli.
Unsung standout: Cadets goalie Kurt Altrichter was excellent in the first period while the game was still in doubt. He made several difficult saves from a prone position to deny the Crusaders the goal that might have changed the flow of the game.
Noteworthy: St. Thomas Academy beat Duluth Marshall 4-3 in the state title game in 2006, but the Hilltoppers returned the favor with a 3-2 double-overtime victory in last year's semifinals. Said Vannelli: "If you're going to win state, you have to go through those guys." Marshall beat the Cadets 8-2 on January 12.
Three stars: 3) James Saintey, St. Thomas Academy -- His goal 17 seconds into the game sent the Cadets on their way. 2) Ryan Walters, St. Thomas Academy -- Scored two goals and assisted on two others. 1) Christian Isackson, St. Thomas Academy -- Assisted on four consecutive Cadets goals in the first and second periods.
