DeLaSalle junior Royce White, one of the top basketball recruits in Minnesota and a target of Gophers coach Tubby Smith, has been dismissed from the Minneapolis private school for undisclosed reasons.
DeLaSalle officials would not comment, but sources confirmed Wednesday that White is no longer a student there. He was averaging more than 21 points per game for the Islanders, who will take a record of 12-12 into a game tonight at St. Agnes in St. Paul.
It was not clear where White will enroll for the remainder of the school year. Earlier this season, the 6-7 forward was suspended from the basketball team for several games.
It is also unclear what his dismissal from DeLaSalle means for his college basketball future. The U's Smith had targeted White as a key in-state recruit. White is ranked among the top 40 juniors in the nation, and the top 10 small forwards, by some recruiting services. He has received scholarship offers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa State and other colleges.
Another question concerns where White will play high school basketball next season. Under the Minnesota State High School League transfer rules that went into effect this year, he will be ineligible in the 2008-09 school year unless his family changes residence.
