Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato: State unexpected, but expect busloads of fans

Last update: March 4, 2008 - 7:34 PM

LITCHFIELD/ DASSEL-COKATO

The things working against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato in the Class 1A boys' hockey state tournament are not hard to identify: The squad is the only team below .500 in the entire field; its quarterfinal opponent today -- Warroad -- also has a wee bit of history and talent on its side.

But those factors matter not one bit when it comes to a community's enthusiasm and suddenly realized hockey dreams.

"It's a huge deal," head coach Chris Olson said. "The people here are absolutely ecstatic. A group of 40 Mite kids came down for the section final, had supper and went to the game. There are a lot of younger kids that are looking at our kids as heroes, and a lot of alumni living vicariously through this."

Litchfield's only previous tourney berth came in 1996; Olson said 11 busloads of fans made the trek to the state tournament that time around, and he expects more of the same today.

Fans received this unofficial holiday after the Dragons knocked off top-seeded New Ulm 3-1 in the Section 3A final. LDC, led by goalie Lucas Johnson, allowed a total of only three goals in three section victories.

"He's solid and efficient," Olson said of Johnson. "Ultimately, he's our backbone."
