BOYS' HOCKEY

Cougars advance to state for the first time

• LAKEVILLE SOUTH 3, LAKEVILLE NORTH 0: Lakeville South, the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, Section 1, needed to travel a bit to beat its crosstown rival -- the game was played at the Rochester Rec Center -- but the trip proved worthwhile as the Cougars shut out the Panthers to earn the first state hockey tournament berth in school history. The score was tied 0-0 through two periods, but junior forward Bill Simon gave the Cougars the lead when he knocked in a rebound 16 seconds into the third period. Lukas Allen extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the period when he one-timed a pass from Chris Cass at 10:27. Simon added an empty-net goal for the final margin. Goalie Hakan Yumusaklar made 30 saves to earn the shutout for Lakeville South.

• LITCHFIELD/DASSEL-COKATO 3, NEW ULM 1:

Making the state tournament is often all about getting hot at the right time. And so it is for Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. Despite a losing record (12-14-1), the Dragons matched their longest winning streak of the season, winning their fourth game in a row to take the Class 1A, Section 3 championship. Senior forward Joe Lecher scored two goals for the Dragons.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Red Knights clinch tie for conference title

• BENILDE-ST. MARGARET'S 83, COOPER 58: As they have all season, the Red Knights leaned on their big two, guard Jordan Taylor and forward Armond Battle, to beat the Hawks. Taylor, who will play at Wisconsin next year, scored 27 points while the Tulsa-bound Battle scored 22. With the victory Benilde-St. Margaret's (17-1 in the conference) clinches at least a tie for the North Suburban championship. Rodney Williams Jr. scored 22 points to lead Cooper.

• ST. THOMAS ACADEMY 90, MAHTOMEDI 67: Alex Schneider hit a milestone Friday night, helping lead the Cadets to victory. Schneider scored 21 points, including the 1,000th point of his career. Michael Fitzgerald hit nine three-pointers en route to a game-high 36 points for the Cadets, who made 15 three-pointers in all.

• HOPKINS 73, WAYZATA 57: Mike Broghammer scored 16 points and Marcus Williams and Raymond Cowles scored 15 points each as the No. 1, Class 4A Royals ran their record to 24-0.

• IRONDALE 55, FRIDLEY 54 (OT): The clock read 0:00, but that was still enough time for Bjorn Westlund. The junior guard was fouled in the act of shooting as the buzzer sounded to end the overtime period. He hit the second of two free throws with no time left on the clock to lift the Knights to the victory.

• MAPLE LAKE 55, ROCKFORD 52: Zach Nordling made a steal with eight seconds left, was fouled while making a layup and converted a three-point play to give the Irish the victory.

• JORDAN 72, LE SUEUR-HENDERSON 71: A three-pointer at the buzzer by Yuriy Malashenko gave the Hubman a come-from-behind victory and spoiled a record-setting performance by Le Sueur-Henderson guard Tyler Schmidt. Schmidt made all 10 of his free throw attempts, giving him what is believed to be a state-record 72 free throws in a row. The record of 62 was set by St. Paul Harding's Jeff Reck in 2002.
