Tony Valek's quest for a second consecutive state championship was likely cut short when he dislocated his elbow late in practice Tuesday night. The Scott West wrestler was injured 10 seconds from the end of the final overtime practice period of the day. His practice opponent attempted a move, Valek posted his hand on the mat and his elbow gave out.
So Valek spent the eve of the state meet individual preliminaries in the emergency room at St. Francis Regional Medical Center. He'll see an orthopedic specialist Wednesday morning to find out whether he can wrestle in any of Wednesday' s matches or perhaps wrestle in Thursday's team competition. Wrestling in a state tournament against some of the best wrestlers in the state a day or two after a major injury seems unlikely, but Panthers co-head coach Jerold Stauffacher, who spent 31/2 hours in the emergency room with Valek, said, "If there's a kid who can do it, it's Tony. He'll do anything he can to try to get back on the mat. And he told me he wasn't worried about missing the individual competition. He was hoping to be ready for the team competition. That's the kind of kid he is."
If Valek is unable to wrestle in his individual match, it will be a forfeit. If he's unable to wrestle in the team competition, the team will be allowed to replace him because of his injury status.
