NOTES
Cooper coach Pauly resigns• Kurt Pauly, the boys' basketball coach at Cooper, resigned Thursday after using foul language Wednesday in the locker room at halftime of the Hawks' 87-65 victory over Columbia Heights.
Pauly, who was in his seventh year as the Hawks coach, was accused by school administrators last spring of using foul language. He said that he then signed a contract stipulating that he was not to use foul language again in the presence of students.
"It said if I used any type of language again, I could be terminated," Pauly said. "But I never admitted to using bad language last year. I'm not excusing what I did. It's indefensible in a learning environment. But what's unfortunate is that a coach slips up and swears and it's a bigger deal than all of the positive things we've done."
Pauly coached the Hawks to the Class 4A championship game in 2006, losing to Hopkins 69-53. Cooper was 13-5 and tied for first place in the North Suburban Conference heading into Friday night's game at Spring Lake Park.
The team was coached by freshman coach Steve Johnson. A call to the Cooper athletic director was not returned.
