BOYS' HOCKEY

Budish leads Hornets to victory over Hopkins

• EDINA 4, HOPKINS 3: Zach Budish went to work short handed Thursday night. The junior center scored with Edina a man short midway through the third period, breaking a tie and lifting the Class 2A, No. 2 Hornets over eighth-ranked Hopkins in the Classic Lake. Hopkins overcame a three-goal deficit, tying it on Brandon Boyd's goal at the 5:02 mark of the third period. Teammate Nate Seashore started the rally with a power-play goal with 17 seconds left in the second period. Budish also assisted on the Hornets' first two goals. Hopkins sophomore goaltender Alex Fons made 42 saves.

• CHAMPLIN PARK 3, ELK RIVER 2 (OT): Senior center Corey Grandner scored a power-play goal one minute, 53 seconds into overtime, giving the Rebels a Northwest Suburban victory over the Elks. The previous four goals were all scored in second period.

• HASTINGS 3, MOUNDS VIEW 2: Leon Werner scored six minutes, 33 seconds into the third period, breaking a tie and leading the Raiders past the Mustangs in the Suburban East. Mounds View overcame an early 2-0 deficit to tie it with two power-play goals, one late in the first period and the other late in the second period.

• ROSEVILLE 2, WHITE BEAR LAKE 2 (OT): Senior forward Paul Dettling scored with two minutes left as the Raiders rallied to tie the Bears in the Suburban East. Teammate Adam Mueller opened the scoring with a power-play goal. White Bear Lake took a 2-1 lead with two second-period goals.

• WOODBURY 2, CRETIN-DERHAM HALL 1 (OT): David Eddy scored with 1:01 remaining in overtime, lifting the Royals over the Raiders in the Suburban East. He also set up Dane Erickson's tying goal at the 14:17 mark of the third period.

GIRLS' HOCKEY

Duluth defeats Cambridge in 7A girls' quarterfinals

• DULUTH 5, CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI/MORA 0: Olivia Paulseth had a hat trick, leading Duluth past Cambridge-Isanti/Mora in the Class 2A, Section 7A quarterfinals. Junior goalie Laura Bellamy made 29 saves for the shutout.

• HUTCHINSON 8, LITCHFIELD/DASSEL-COKATO 0: Eighth grade forward Sara Carlson had two goals and two assists as the Tigers shut out Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato in the Class 1A, Section 2 quarterfinals. Laura Carlson also had two goals, both coming on the power play.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Kimball defeats Rockford

• KIMBALL 58, ROCKFORD 55: Sophomore Scott Nystrom scored 29 points, rallying the Cubs past previously unbeaten Class 2A, No. 2 Rockford. Kimball overcame a 10-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Rockets 34-21 in the second half.

• ORONO 58, GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE 55: The Spartans scored the first 13 points of the second half, then held on to beat the Panthers in the Wright County. Senior Patrick Boerner had 22 points and five assists for Orono.

• BENILDE-ST. MARGARET'S 81, TOTINO-GRACE 59: Seniors Jordan Taylor (24) and Armond Battle (21) combined for 45 points, leading the Class 3A, No. 1 Red Knights past the Eagles in the North Suburban. Benilde-St. Margaret's built a 44-24 lead at halftime. Sophomore guard Jonathon Crockett scored a game-high 26 points for Totino-Grace.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

South wins without Hill

• MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH 68, MINNEAPOLIS NORTH 52: The Tigers proved they can win without Tayler Hill. The backcourt tandem of senior Ephesia Holmes (21) and sophomore Tyisha Smith (15) combined for 36 points as South topped North in the Minneapolis City. Hill, the Tigers' leading scorer, missed the game due to illness. Junior center Briana Edwards had 22 points for the Polars.

• APPLE VALLEY 66, BLOOMINGTON JEFFERSON 50: The Eagles soared to a 21-point halftime lead and cruised past the Jaguars in the Lake. Senior guard Cassie Hubler paced four players in double figures with 19 points. She also had seven assists.

• CHASKA 71, EDEN PRAIRIE 57: Courtney Boylan brings a whole different dimension to the Hawks. The senior guard scored 26 points in a Lake victory over the Eagles.

• VISITATION 65, CONCORDIA ACADEMY (ROSEVILLE) 56: Courtney Kranz did the damage inside and Allison O'Neill on the perimeter. Kranz scored 25 points and O'Neill hit four three-pointers en route to an 18-point performance as the Blazers topped the Beacons in the Tri-Metro.
