A year ago, Matt LaPrade was playing bantam-level hockey. Now he's the starting goalie for the varsity team at Holy Family in Victoria. In the time since, he's had his rough patches but calls it all a valuable learning experience. He has backstopped the Fire to a 10-7-2 record. This week, LaPrade took time out to talk with the Star Tribune's Brian Stensaas.
Q How did you first get into being a goalie?
A We've always had season tickets to the Gophers hockey games, and our seats are right behind the net. So I grew up watching that, and I just loved it.
Q Anyone in particular you remember watching and wanting to be like?
A Steve DeBus. I remember watching him and really liking it.
Q Knowing the game is on your shoulders, do you ever get nervous?
A I like it. Sometimes it can get hard, but the pressure and having everyone count on me is great.
Q How have you trained to be a goalie?
A I have a butterfly style; I like going down to block the shots. I go to the [Robb] Stauber Goalcrease places [where he gets specialized goalie training]. When I was younger I used the Staubar, which is a bar that keeps your arms up and out during practice.
Q You let in seven goals your first game for Holy Family. How tough was that?
A It was an eye-opener. We were playing really well, and then they just started scoring. It was like it wasn't going to end. I really learned I need to stay out more and that varsity is a lot different than bantams.
Q This is your first year on varsity. What's the biggest difference between this year and being in youth programs?
A The shots are so much harder. And [opponents] can shoot where they want to shoot every time.
Q After that first loss you went on to lose a one-goal game, then win six straight. What changed?
A I really worked hard in practices. And it just seemed to get easier with every game for me. That first game [against Farmington] I just learned a ton. It helped me a lot actually.
Q You're about 6-2. How do you use your height to your advantage in net?
A By staying out more and being a big guy, it takes up a lot more net. It really cuts down the angles.
Q Has it been rough being a freshman on varsity?
A My teammates are really nice. They're great. Even when I play bad they know I'm just a freshman and they don't get that mad. They really try and encourage me.
Q Is your team ready to make a run here at the end of the season?
A Yeah. We're going to need to play consistent every game and score. And I'm going to need to continue to play well.
