PENALTIES: BEFORE AND AFTER

Penalties for checking from behind were called significantly more often after Jack Jablonski was injured in a game last Dec. 30. Two weeks later the Minnesota State High School League elevated the consequences for such hits: Players called for a check from behind, boarding or head contact would get at least a five-minute major penalty. Previously the rules gave referees more discretion. Figures below show penalties called during the 2011-12 regular season (excluding playoffs) for boys' high school hockey.
