Participation fees around the metro

PARTICIPATION FEES AROUND THE METRO

A look at varsity sports participation fees at various metro area high schools. For the purpose of consistency, dance team and cheerleading were not included in the figures. Several schools reported large price jumps in the past five to eight years -- Hopkins, for instance, has gone from $65 per sport in 1999-2000 to $220 every year since 2004 -- while others said they anticipate more jumps in the near future (Lakeville North's fee was $110 in 2006-07, and the school is looking at an increase to $230 next year).

At some schools, fees vary by sport (hockey and football tend to be more expensive than other sports). Many schools also offer discounted fees based on participation in free or reduced lunch programs; several schools also have a discount for playing multiple sports and/or have a maximum that one family would have to pay in a given year:
