South St. Paul, hockey

For a much of her high school career – until this year, actually – LaShomb took her place as a Packers blue-liner for granted.

“I think back on how fast it’s gone by,” said the fifth-year defenseman. “In earlier years, though, it seemed like an eternity. Now, it seems like it’s gone by in the blink of an eye.”

With just five games left in the regular season, LaShomb is determined to squeeze the most out of her remaining high school career.

She spent her winter break playing with the U.S. National Under-18 team in the World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic. “It was an amazing experience,” she said. “I never expected to be able compete at that level.”

In four games since she returned, the University of North Dakota recruit has three goals and eight assists, helping the Packers run their winning streak to seven.

“In some respects, I do wish I had enjoyed things a little bit more,” LaShomb said. “But in others, I know I’ve done all I can to bring myself to where I am now and I’ve had a lot of fun.”

LaShomb stressed that she does have one last goal: “win a state championship before I go.”

Sam LaShomb is determined to squeeze the most out of her final year in high school hockey before heading off for a college career at North Dakota.
