With an eye towards his future, Slater, the No. 2-ranked Nordic ski racer in the state, has found free time tough to come by this winter. In addtion to his role as the Warriors’ top skier, he trains for two hours each day and spent his Winter Break in Rumford, Maine participating in the U.S. Senior National Meet, where he finished as high as sixth in his age group (18-under) in a freestyle sprint race.

Toss in the lack of snow, which adds more than an hour to his round-trip commute time as he traverses the metro en route to the few ski areas that still have a skiable surface, and Slater acknowledges he’s had precious little time to relax.

“I’ve been real busy this year,” he said. “There’s a lot of traffic at [the ski areas] that have snow, so it’s tough to get the hard workouts I want in. And I’ve been going to all the Junior National qualifiers.”

Still, Slater considers his commitment to his school to be a priority, as evidenced by his convincing victories in a Classic Suburban conference meet Thursday and at the ABC Relays Saturday.

“It helps me stay connected to with my school, which is important,” he said. “And it’s important to help me get in extra racing. Junior Nationals does not supply a lot of crucial in-season preparation.”

Slater was hardly challenged in his two victories last week, but he was able to put a positive spin on his dominance. “I went out with the intention of racing against myself,” he said. “If I want to be the best, it’s good for me to learn how hard I can push myself.”
