Red Knights' defense handcuffs Edina

• SCHWAN CUP (SILVER DIVISION): Benilde-St. Margaret's defense has been solid all season, and that was the case again Wednesday in upsetting Class 2A, No. 1 Edina 2-1 in the quarterfinals at Aldrich Arena. The Red Knights (8-1) have surrendered only 17 goals in their nine games. Benilde-St. Margaret's took a 2-0 lead when Brett Patterson scored 43 seconds into the second period. Teammate Steve Zierke opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. Marshall Everson scored a power-play goal for Edina (9-1) in the third period. ... Riley Borer scored the only shootout goal as Breck beat Wayzata. The two teams played to a 2-2 overtime tie. Tyson Fulton scored both goals for Breck, and Lucas Whelan did likewise for Wayzata. ... James Saintey had one goal and two assists in the last two periods as St. Thomas Academy scored the final five goals in defeating Cretin-Derham Hall 6-2. ... Nick Bjugstad opened the third period with back-to-back goals as Blaine scored five times in the period and pulled away from Brainerd 8-3.

• SCHWAN CUP (BRONZE DIVISION): Vinnie Ferraro opened and closed the scoring as Stillwater shut out Champlin Park 4-0 in the quarterfinals at Brooklyn Park Arena. Tristan Pennella made 18 saves for the shutout. ... Garrick Perry scored twice, leading Eastview past Orono 4-1. The Lightning scored two power-play goals and one shorthanded. ... Maple Grove scored five goals in the second period en route to an 8-2 victory over Blake. Matt Dee and Tom Malone each had two goals for the Crimson. ... • SCHWAN CUP (BLUE DIVISION): Eagan scored the first five goals, and went to beat Coon Rapids 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Kelsey Kennedy and Mollie Carroll each had two goals for the Wildcats. ... Sally Komarek's second goal, on a power play midway through the third period, broke a tie, lifting Blake over Irondale 4-2. Komarek figured in all four goals (scoring two and assisting on two). Teammate Margaret Chute had three assists. ... Billye Nelson scored the deciding goal in a shootout, lifting Warroad over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton. The two teams played to a 1-1 overtime tie. Both teams also scored one in the shootout before Nelson's goal. Jessie Ryan's goal with a little more than seven minutes remaining tied it. ... Cara Johnson had a hat trick as Hopkins beat Elk River 6-3.

• SCHWAN CUP (RED DIVISION): Natalie Berg had one goal and one assist as Minnetonka held off Forest Lake 3-2 despite outshooting the Rangers 41-12 in their quarterfinal matchup. ... Mandi Stetson and Janessa Haller scored short-handed goals 58 seconds apart in the second period, leading Anoka past Orono 4-1. Haller had two goals and an assist. ... Laura Bellamy stopped all 21 shots she faced as Duluth shut out Cambridge-Isanti 2-0. ... Alyssa Weise and Stevie Fiek each had one goal and one assist in Rochester Mayo's 3-1 triumph over Silver Bay.
