Athletes of the week

Last update: December 3, 2007 - 9:32 PM

JULIANNE MITCHELL

Minneapolis Edison, basketball

The Tommies senior has a rejuvenated bounce in her step.

Her two performances the first week of her final season is easily summed up by coach Charlita Williamson.

"At the high school level, I've never seen too many kids do what she did," Williamson said.

The numbers speak for themselves.

The 5-10 Mitchell finished her week with 40 points, 29 rebounds, nine steals, five assists and five blocked shots in a 96-41 victory over St. Paul Arlington. She started it with 35 points, 19 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists against Breck, a 73-41 Tommies triumph.

"It was because of a lot of work by my teammates," Mitchell said. "I try to bring a lot of energy to the team."

She accomplished her goal with a group that was coming off a 5-22 season.

"Julianne makes everybody on our team better," Williamson said. "They feed off her energy and learn a lot from her on the court."

MARSHALL EVERSON

Edina, hockey

One of the Hornets' outstanding juniors, Everson stung Rochester Century and Eastview. Edina got off to a slow start against Rochester Century, only to see Everson take over the game. He had five goals and one assist in an 8-2 victory, erasing an early two-goal deficit. Everson, who recently gave a verbal commitment to Harvard, also scored twice in a 4-2 victory over Eastview.

CASSI CARPENTER

Centennial, hockey

The Cougars won their first six games but struggled in doing so, according to coach Mike Diggins. One person who hasn't is their senior goalie. Carpenter has a goal-against average of 0.67 and a save percentage of .970.

SAM BLAISDELL

Minnehaha Academy, hockey

The junior center has been instrumental in the Redhawks' 3-0 start. He had a hand in 14 of their 17 goals -- nine goals and five assists -- in the opening week of the season. He scored four consecutive goals and finished with five against Richfield and netted the game-winner in overtime in a 4-3 victory over St. Paul Johnson.

BRITTNYE MCSPARRON

Eastview, basketball

McSparron is providing the leadership coaches hope to get out of their seniors. She turned in a 28-point performance against Burnsville and followed it with a 27-point night at Bloomington Jefferson. The guard, who is headed for Drake, also leads the team in assists.

MATT BERGLAND

Benilde-St. Margaret's, hockey

Red Knight coach Ken Pauly calls Bergland "a tenacious worker." He lived up to the billing. The senior forward recorded three goals and five assists in the Red Knights' first two victories.
