Lakeville North has counted on senior running back Paul Bernier all season. It wasn't bound to change Friday night with a state tournament trip on the line.

Bernier ran for his second touchdown in the third quarter as the Panthers topped Owatonna 14-7 in the Class 5A, Section 1 final in Lakeville. The Panthers (8-3) will meet Cretin-Derham Hall (11-0) in the state tournament quarterfinals Thursday.

Owatonna controlled the ball on the ground throughout the first half, but the Panthers made it 7-6 before halftime on Bernier's 3-yard run.

After Bernier's second score, the Panther defense made the lead stand up. The Huskies marched to the Lakeville North 15-yard line in the final two minutes but were stopped on downs. The Panthers then ran out the clock.

Bernier rushed for 126 yards on 27 carries. He has gained 1,415 yards on the ground this season.

Owatonna (8-3) opened the scoring on Jon Bucher's 1-yard run in the second quarter.
