The Okuma Line is a Proven Tool

Fishing in the Otter Tail Lake area continues to be good. Jig and minnow, or snell are working well. Depths are in the 8 to 30 foot range. Crawlers and leeches are also starting to heat up. For some night fishing try a jig and bobber in 10 to 15 feet of water. Lastly, bass fishing and panfish bite has also been very good.
Ken's Tackle started caring a new line called Okuma. Okuma is a Canadian company who is really coming on strong. Okuma makes an assortment of rods and reels for those in search of a good mid-priced outfit. We recommend an Avenger spinning reel that has seven ball bearings and an Aquios rod for medium action for your walleye. This make is a sweet combo for under $80.
Muskie fishermen: check out their muskie rods and reels for muskie opener this week-end.

Wild 104.1 Walleye Extravaganza Tournament on Otter Tail Lake
Posted by: Gary Peterson Updated: May 18, 2009 - 9:00 AMThis past weekend was the two day, Wild 104.1 "Walleye Extravaganza" tournament on Otter Tail Lake. It produced some nice catches considering weather conditions. First day leaders were Chris Roehl and Fred Sanchez with 6 fish weighing in at 17 lbs. Second day of the tournament brought in bigger fish weights with the largest being 19 lbs for six fish. But the team of Roehl and Sanchez prevailed with a two day total of 29.8 lbs and received the big check of $2000!

Wind and cold weather has been a contributing factor of a slow fishing start, with water at 48 degrees on big lakes and 50 to 55 on the smaller lakes. Weather is expected to warm up this week, so look for fishing to really turn on.

Otter Tail Lake opener results
Posted by: Gary Peterson Updated: May 11, 2009 - 10:56 AMOpener in the Otter Tail Lake area started off in the evening with some success for the shore fishermen at the river inlets and outlets.
During the morning hours fishing was fair until a cold front moved through and slowed things down. Fishing improved greatly after dark with some nice fish taken in 15 feet of water with a lighted bobber and plain hook tipped with a shiner. As the water starts to warm this week, look for fish on shoreline breaks and in shallower water as bait fish start to move in.

Shiners - a Fishermen's Best Friend

With opener, May 9th at 12:01 a.m., I thought I'd talk about bait and what presentation should work best in the Otter Tail Lake area.
Water temperature on Otter Tail Lake is 46 degrees, so it is on the cold side. Walleyes are almost done spawning so they may be a little lethargic during opener. Males will be hovering around the gravel areas in 5 to 15 feet of water. A Jig or Lindy Rig tipped with a lake shiner is your best bet. If the bite is off, tip your jig with a smaller minnow as they could be finicky for a larger minnow.
In warmer, darker water, use a leech or night crawler. Always have a mixed selection of bait with you so you can change presentation for the depth and temperature of water you are fishing in.
Ken's Tackle, on the west side of Otter Tail Lake, has a good supply of shiners for opener. They are in short supply in most areas of Minnesota because of the cold weather. So please come and arm yourself with the best bait for the catch!

We Have Fish on the Brain!
Posted by: Gary Peterson Updated: April 29, 2009 - 1:13 PMWe have fish on the brain! The million dollar question these days is, "Is the ice off the lake yet?" Yes! Late in April, the third week, the ice disappeared. We are now ready for fishing opener on May 9th.
We are hoping for a better than average opener because there was not a lot of pressure on the lake this winter because of all the snow. As the water warms up, shiners should be running and we are ready to make fishing memories. As my best friend used to call this time of the year - We have fish on the brain!
This year, a couple of tournaments planned on Otter Tail Lake: the Wild 104.1, May 15&16 and Lake Country Sportsmen's tournament on June 14. Both are well run and you can get additional information by calling us at 218-495-2895 or e-mail us at our website, www.kenstackle.com.
