Another beautiful day out on the river. Had a couple of clients out today Brian and young Ben (age 5). We spent a half day chasing Walleye's and Saugers. The day was a little rainy but over all it wasn't to bad. Young Ben was on a fire he put four 17" Saugers in the boat and one 14.5 Sauger was released. The water temp on the St. Croix is 79 degrees and really starting to warm up. The water is the clearest I have ever seen for this time of season. This is strange because normally in the summer the water would be a lot more stained and the fish would be found in deeper water. The fish being caught are found anywhere from 3 to 24ft. Most being caught in the shallows. Also the fish caught in the shallows are the bigger fish. We are still using jig's with Minnow's or Crawler's, Rigs with Crawler, Leeches and Minnows. The Smallmouth fishing is outstanding early morning it is tough to keep them off your line. Finding them using tubes and poppers and even catching them while dragging a Rig with a Crawler in 8 to 12 feet of water. The Catfish are really starting to come on strong. It is not unusual to catch a Channel cat 5+lbs or even a Flathead catfish weighing upwards of the mid 20lbs. Starting now I will be sharing some time on the Mississippi pool 2 for some catch and release fun. This is were you can catch a nice trophy Walleye. Last season out on the Mississippi the avg. fish weighed 4.5lbs with a lot of 8,9,10 lb fish being caught. Great Pictures with great stories.

On the St. Croix today, after not having one of my best day's the previous day, the winds just rocked the boat at 25 plus mph from the north with some high wind gust. I brought in one legal fish with many short fish that were returned back in the water. I wasn't feeling overly confident about today's trip out with new clients on the river due to the weather forecast calling for south winds at 25 plus mph mixed with thunderstorms. But I will do my best to beat the worst possible winds. South winds. If you know the river there is no hiding from a south wind. Started out the day with winds at 8 mph out of the south. No rain, clear sky's, smooth water and water temperatures between 64 to 67 degree's. This looks good, but I know the winds are coming. I meet the clients at the dock at 6:30 am. We do a run to the first spot and the fishing is on. We pop 2 fish right away. We move a couple of more times before the wind picks up and hit 3 more fish. About 8:30 am the winds are now blowing in the mid teens with some serious wind gust. Now it's time to work for the fish. We move a few more times and take 2 more fish and lost 2 others right at the boat. Overall this turned into a pretty good day of fishing with 7 legal fish in the boat. Most of the fish caught today were found in 17 to 24 feet of water. I had a great time on the water with some great company.

On the St. Croix today ~~ WOW! First, this is what I call hard core fishing. It wasn't the most diserable of conditions. Winds were out of the South at 25 to 30 mph most of the day. I couldn't even tell you what the wind gusts were. If you have ever fished the St. Croix you know there aren't too many places to hide from a straight south wind. Water temperature was at 57-58 degrees, which is good. I started out jigging a minnow, realizing really quick the jig isn't going to work today. I changed over to rigging a night crawler with a couple of drift socks. This slowed me down to .75 to 1mph. This I could work with. Several more short Walleye and a 17" Walleye, Success. I found most of the fish in 17 to 23 feet of water. As the white caps continued to push me out of the zone, I changed it up again and began a troll. Trolling did produce the next 17" fish, but still a lot of short fish. Changed spots a lot looking for areas not as wind blown. I even back trolled for a while with a night crawler and found it was really tough to keep where I needed to be and didn't have a whole lot of luck. As the water was making bigger breaker's, I finally called it a day at 1pm. It was still a great day on the water and this really does beat working.

Today on the St. Croix the winds were out of the north at 12 mph with a light chop on the water. The walleye I caught were found in 18 to 23 feet of water and were biting on rigs&jigs with night crawlers and minnows. I kept the presentation slow to keep the bait in front of them and the fishing was fantastic. I caught a dozen short fish that didn't make the size slot of 15 inches, and three 16 to 18 inch for a fish fry. But the catch of the day was 29 inches and weighed in at 9lbs, 8oz. This girl was a football and she was released after a couple of photos. Other fish caught today were sheephead, white bass and catfish. With fishing starting to pickup it doesn't matter if you're looking for walleye or pan fish, look no further than the St. Croix River -- it has it all.

You couldn't ask for more of a beautiful day! I had 4 hours out on the water with air temperatures of 70 degrees. Water temps that ranged from 55 to 57 degrees and wind's out of the east at 5 mph. The Walleye were biting in 18 to 20 feet of water and really active. All the fish caught today were biting night crawler's with a Lindy Rig's with a slow presentation. Jig&Minnow with a hard drop and lift hold was also working. Among the many Walleye that were caught there were also White Bass and Jumbo Perch.
I released about two dozen Walleye that didn't make the 15" minimum all being 14 to 14.5 inch fish which had to be returned back to the water for another day. I love going out and having a busy fishing day, you just can't beat the fun. Really good to see so many smaller Walleye's that means the population is really growing and the future of Walleye fishing in the river will be there to enjoy by everyone. The St. Croix is a hidden gem of a fishery and produce's some good eating fish with some really nice trophies mixed in.
