1940 Armistice Day storm at a glance

Last update: November 7, 2009 - 9:10 PM

AT A GLANCE

• The barometric pressure at Duluth and La Crosse, Wis., during the Armistice Day blizzard (28.66 inches) continues to stand among the lowest ever measured in the Upper Midwest.

• National Weather Service records put the winds at between 50 and 80 miles per hour during the storm's peak. Snow depths of between a foot and 27 inches were reported across the storm's 100-mile-wide path. Drifts of 20 feet were common. In downtown Minneapolis, visibility was at or near zero for seven hours.

• During the storm, 38 duck hunters died in the Mississippi River bottoms: 13 in Wisconsin and 25 in Minnesota.

• The 1940 duck season in Minnesota ran from Oct. 1 to Nov. 29.
