Young duck hunters find success; cover thick for grouse

Chad Cunningham of Shafer, Minn., shot this 400-pound black bear recently near Taylors Falls. Hunters already have killed more bears this season than all of last season. The season runs to Oct. 18.

Despite balmy weather Saturday for Minnesota's 14th annual Youth Waterfowl Day, many young aspiring duck hunters found action.

At the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in the Twin Cities area, 11 youths bagged 27 ducks -- mostly mallards, wood ducks, teal and wigeon -- and seven geese. "There were a lot of birds," reported Tom Cooper, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who helped coordinate the hunt. "The kids had a great time. Every kid got shots, and three shot their limits."

The Young Waterfowlers Program at the refuge is a joint effort between the federal agency and the Minnesota Waterfowl Association. The number of participants was down this year, Cooper said, though he's not sure why. Normally they get around 20 kids. The program includes classroom sessions, a field day with shooting, lunch and a banquet.

State officials aren't sure how many youths participate in Youth Waterfowl Day, though estimates based on hunter surveys put the number in excess of 20,000. The event allows kids age 15 and under to hunt waterfowl for the day accompanied by non-hunting adults. The idea is to encourage youngsters to take up waterfowl hunting -- a key goal considering the number of Minnesota duck hunters has been shrinking.

Finding ruffed grouse

It's hard to tell whether ruffed grouse numbers are indeed way up, as projected, after only one weekend of the hunting season, but grouse hunting reports from DNR conservation officers were mostly positive. Thick cover hampered hunters, but "decent" numbers of birds were seen in the Two Harbors area. Hunter success ranged from poor to fair near Grand Marais, and it was "moderate" near Grand Rapids.
