"We went out on Monday after the opening weekend and I caught about six fish between 20 and 28 inches," said Shyan Fitzgerald of Minneapolis, who pulled a 30-inch walleye from Lke of the Woods. "Two of them were over 28 inches. About a hour later I caught this one. It measured just over 30 inches and weighed 11.5 pounds. It was a great fight. It took a good 10 minutes to pull it in. I had to loosen the drag because it fought a lot harder than the others and I didn't want my line to break. I was using a chartreuse grub with 'special bait.' It was the best opener of my life."

A fun bass bait is the Slurpies Brush Beaver. Pitched or flipped, the Brush Beaver is shaped like a crawfish with a flapping beaver tail. Made by Northland of Bemidji, it's scented with Sow Sauce and does what it promises: provokes bass in thick cover to strike.

The changes follow a concerted effort by a mix of state angling groups, which in itself is good news. Too often anglers have been no-shows at the Capitol, and in various conservation movements.
