Chisago City area: With water temperatures around 59 degrees, it was a good opener in the area. According to Frankie's Bait, anglers were having success on Chisago and Lindstrom, while Sunrise was producing northerns. Anglers had early-morning success and in shallow (5 to 12 feet deep) water, especially where weeds were starting to go grow, dragging jigheads and fatheads. The crappie bite was real good.
Alexandria: According to Christopherson's Bait and Tackle, anglers were reporting some success catching walleyes using crankbait in shallow flats.
Duluth: The morning started out with light rain, but it didn't last, and the fishing was good according to Fisherman's Corner. Anglers were having success on the St. Louis River down at the Bay and on Fish Lake.
Ely: While it was cool, it wasn't windy like last year's opener and anglers were having a lot of success. Most lakes in the area have been ice-free for about 10 days and the water temperature was around 49 degrees. According to Skube's Bait, anglers had a lot of success early in the morning in shallow water -- 10 feet and in.
Lake Minnetonka: Even though the lake was a little rough in the first few hours after midnight, anglers had success, according to Wayzata Bait. Shallow areas were producing decent-sized walleyes, in the 18-22 inch range.
Lake of the Woods: Even though it was cold with snow showers in the morning (by mid-afternoon it was 40), the fishing was good according to Border Bait. Anglers were having success on 4-Mile Bay using frozen shiners, live bait and rapalas. At least five boats returned before 10 a.m. having reached their limit. One 33¼-inch walleye was reported and an 8-year old landed a 31-inch walleye.
Leech Lake: The lake became ice-free on Wednesday, according to Reed's Sporting Goods, and was really producing Saturday. Many anglers were catching their limits, and good fishing was reported near Pine Point, Stone Point and Goose Island. Anglers were having success in shallow water with jig minnows, Vegas jigs and shiners. Many walleyes in the 26, 27 and 28-inch range were being reported.
Mankato: Lake Washington was the best in the area for walleyes. According to The Bobber Shop, anglers had success in 20-26 feet of water using a jig and minnow. Fishing was good around Second Point, Third Point and Grassy Island and produced a lot of fish in 18-27 inch-range. The Minnesota River also was producing walleyes.
Mille Lacs: While not as cold as last year, it was still windy and cool but anglers still were having success, especially in shallow water. Many anglers who went out right after midnight had success, catching their limit.
Park Rapids: The walleye bite was all right in the area, especially in shallow areas, but according to Delaney's, river fishing was better. The crappie fishing has picked up in the past week.
