WHITE BASS FACTS
SIZE
They range in size up to about 15 inches and average about 1.5 pounds, but they can run 2 to 3 pounds.
RECORD
The state record is a 4-pound, 2.4-ounce fish caught on the Mississippi River in Wabasha County in 2004.
BIOLOGY
They spawn over gravel bars in late April to June, and mass upstream spawning runs in the Mississippi and its major tributaries provide excellent fishing in April and May.
FISHING
They will hit spinner baits, and anglers catch them on jigs and minnows, too. Anglers sometimes spot gizzard shad or minnows jumping from the water, trying to escape a school of hungry white bass.
RANGE
They might travel more than 100 miles in their season movements.
