Lots of early-winter snow has been a godsend for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers around the state, and trails in many areas are in great shape. Snowmobile enthusiasts and skiers have been out in force.
Conservation officer Mike Shelden of Alexandria says the snowmobile trails there have been the busiest they've been in a decade. And officer Karl Hadrits of Crosby reported a sharp increase in snowmobile and cross-country ski activity with the recent heavy snowfalls.
But the heavy snow has created havoc for lake travel. Conservation officers report that many lakes have deep slush, making travel difficult. At Glenwood, some anglers have removed their ice fishing houses because of deep snow and slush.
"Slush is still bad and seems to be playing a major role in keeping people off the lakes,'' said officer Matt Frericks of Virginia. He said snowmobile trails there are in good shape despite heavy use.
