When I bought the land and found a cabin builder in 1994, I had no idea what I was doing.

As a child, our family always took a two-week camping vacation in northwestern Wisconsin. My father was born and raised just outside Superior. I had a quaint and simple 600-square-foot, cedar-sided cabin built with simplicity in mind. The land is on the northern end of Lake Holcombe in northern Chippewa County, south of Ladysmith. The final phase was deciding where to place the boat steps and dock to this 4,000-acre beauty.

My children were toddlers. Little did I realize how powerful the pull would be to head there every weekend, vacation and any other chance to hang out, have a campfire, to fish and to play. My children now are adults and continue to reflect on "growing up" at the cabin. It remains a pull to return and visit.

Twenty years later and a few years shy of becoming a retired teacher, I think the cabin's future will continue to build memories. My wife and I head there for warm summer trips and bitter-cold winter getaways. I'm looking forward to showing the next generation what life away from busy days, electronic devices and busy lives looks like. Because the deed is in trust, future generations will create their own memories to share.
