•Minnesota's mourning dove season runs Sept. 1-Oct. 30,

although birds usually migrate south at the first cold snap, meaning the doves can be mostly gone by mid-September.

•The DNR estimates about 13,000 people hunted doves last year, and they bagged 101,000 doves - the most since the season reopened in 2004. The estimated take per hunter was 7.7 doves.

•Mourning doves are one of the most abundant and widely distributed birds in North America. The fall population recently was estimated at 350 million.

•Federal officials estimate that hunters harvest 5 to 10 percent of the population.
