Save Our Monarchs (www.saveourmonarchs.org) is a nonprofit launched this summer with the goal of planting more milkweed. The plant provides a place for butterflies to lay their eggs and serves as a way station for feeding and resting on the journey south.
Send for free seeds by mail or look for free seed packets at the State Fair through Sept. 1 at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s master gardeners booth. You also can pick up vouchers for free seeds at the Butterfly House.
If you miss the fair, many garden centers have seeds. Find them at Bachman’s, Sunnyside Gardens, Tangletown Gardens and Wagner’s Greenhouses. Some stores also carry seeds, including Goldy’s Locker Room and Linden Hills Co-op.
