    The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is an excellent purveyor of maple syrup science, history – and samples.

  • Lester, an 18-month-old Labrador, retrieved an antler “shed’’ while training for the World Shed Dog Championships next weekend near Northfield.

  • Antlers shed by deer carry a particular odor that trained dogs seek to find and retrieve the sheds. In shed-finding competitions, antlers are doused with artificial scent that mimics the real thing.

  • Easton, who won the 2011 World Shed Dog Championship, open division, with her owner and trainer, Josh Miller of River Stone Kennels in New Richmond, Wis., returns with a whitetail antler in preparation for next weekend's title event near Northfield, Minn.
