This was the heyday of wildlife art, and a Raymer original would fetch around $3,000.
“I could finish a full painting in three days then so that was pretty good money. Now, it takes me three weeks to complete a painting. My speeds at the board are slow and slower,” Raymer. said.
But the rock-steady hand is still there. The patience to paint every detail of every feather on a mallard and to perfectly match the blue of its wing speculum hasn’t faltered with time. Nature’s realism captured on canvas.
Raymer currently has a limited number of prints depicting trout, deer, pheasants and ducks available for sale. For information about ordering, call Raymer’s studio at 612-627-9619. To browse more examples of his work, visit www.mnartists.org and enter Louis Raymer in the search box.
Raymer is now 85, and consistency remains the hallmark of his style. After all these years he still makes great paintings, has the constant encouragement of his wife and revels in an undiminished passion for the world of nature.
He has recently begun filing the barbs off the hooks on his rainbow trout flies. It’s an accommodation to the fish that brings both fame and fun to Raymer’s life.
Bill Klein is an avid hunter, angler and student of nature. He has been writing about the outdoors since his retirement from AT&T.
