Continued: Prairie landscape leaves lessons to last a lifetime

What I witnessed next I’ll never forget. In the gloaming, as I admired a blood-red sunset, those same mallards poured back into that wetland, just inches above our heads, their wing beats creating a cool, noisy draft. At that moment, sound had feel and adrenaline rippled my spine.

I didn’t pull the trigger, but I finally understood Rudy’s words: “You have to love the prairie a little bit before it loves you back.”

He was right. He always was. Lesson taught, lesson learned.

I’ll always have a deep affection for north-central Minnesota. But in autumn my internal compass was recalibrated west, pulling me into prairie country. Thanks, Rudy.
