State fishing report

Duluth area: Island Lake seems to be the main lake where anglers are heading for good walleye, muskie or smallmouth action. The west side of the lake seems to be producing the best walleye action at about 20 feet using chub minnows or nightcrawlers. For muskies, anglers are using bigger crank baits or spinner rigs along weed lines for structures. Smallmouth bass are at about 3-4 feet using spinner baits or buzz baits. Fish Lake has produced really good panfish action, particularly bluegills, using nightcrawlers along weed beds.

Lake Superior: Anglers are catching coho salmon up near Silver Bay using Rapalas or spoons in depths ranging from 5-35 feet. Chinook salmon are being caught near Duluth at about 15-35 feet using mainly spoons. The best walleye action is along the south shore of Wisconsin.

Chisago Lakes area: The best lake for walleye action has been South Center, using redtail or fathead minnows at about 15 feet during the afternoons or evenings. Bass and panfish are hitting on the chain of lakes (North and South Center, Chisago and South Lindstrom lakes). Bass anglers are using baits such as Scum Frog or plastic baits, while panfish are hitting on waxworms.

Leech Lake area: Walleyes are taking jigs tipped with leeches along the cabbage beds of Sucker Bay in about 10-12 feet. Another good walleye spot has been the humps in Walker Bay and main-lake rock reefs. Muskies are active around cabbage beds. Portage Bay and the Minnesota Island area of Steamboat Bay are producing bass.

Lake Winnibigoshish: Spinners tipped with crawlers or leeches are the best way to catch walleyes along deeper weed lines at about 10-15 feet on parts of the lake such as Tamarac Bay near the river channel. Smaller lakes in the area such as Big or Little Cut Foot Sioux, Portage or Six Mile are producing good panfish action along deeper weed edges.
