State fishing report

Brainerd Lakes area: The best walleye action has been on Gull, Whitefish and North Long near weed lines at 10-20 feet, using primarily Lindy Rigs with minnows or nightcrawlers. Bass, northerns and panfish have produced good action on area lakes as well.

Detroit Lakes area: Cooler water temperatures in the area has slowed fishing somewhat but anglers are catching some walleyes on area lakes along mid-lake structures or drop-offs at 15-25 feet using spinner baits with leeches or nightcrawlers. Northerns are active on flats while panfish can be found near weed lines. Big Detroit, Sallie and Pelican are the best lakes for muskie action near weed beds.

Ely area: Anglers are trolling with spinner baits on lakes such as White Iron, Basswood or Shagawa for good walleye action at depths ranging from 5-25 feet. Northerns are hitting on crank baits or spinner baits at about 5-15 feet, while crappies and sunnies are taking wax worms or smaller minnows.

Rainy Lake/Rainy River: Anglers are catching walleyes at about 25-35 feet using nightcrawlers or leeches along submerged reefs. Artificial baits have worked the best for productive bass action. On the Rainy River, the best walleye spot is above the dam and around Ranier Rapids or downstream from the dam using shiner minnows along rock structures or drop-offs.

Willmar lakes area: Despite the recent cooler weather, anglers still are enjoying some good walleye action on Green Lake at 25-30 feet or on lakes such as Eagle, Andrew, Florida or Nest, primarily using leeches or crawlers. Northerns and bass are being caught at about 10-15 feet near weed lines. The best lakes for panfish have been Diamond, Eagle, Andrew, Florida, and Nest at about 10-15 feet.
