Fantasy fishing makes big payday a reality

Last update: March 5, 2008 - 12:24 AM

A fantasy it's not: Chris Toring, 37, of St. Michael, won $100,000 last weekend playing an online fishing game sponsored by FLW Outdoors, creators of FLW Fantasy Fishing.

Toring was on vacation Monday in Arizona, playing in a Frisbee golf tournament, when Irwin Jacobs of the Twin Cities, chairman of FLW Outdoors, sponsor of numerous FLW fishing tournaments, called to tell him he was the first $100,000 winner in FLW Fantasy Fishing (www.fantasyfishing.com).

More than 4,000 prizes totaling about $7.3 million will be awarded during the FLW Fantasy Fishing season. Top prize is $1 million to the overall points winner for the season. Players can sign up until Aug. 14.

Toring isn't an active fisherman, but he plays in four fantasy football leagues and also plays fantasy NASCAR. "I got an e-mail reminder last Wednesday to pick a team for last weekend's tournament on [Florida's] Lake Toho,'' Toring said.

A single father of two boys, Toring is national marketing director for RZ Financial in Monticello. He plans to use part of the money to go on vacation with his kids.
