State fishing report

Lake Winnibigoshish: A large mayfly hatch has failed to hamper walleye fishing on the big lake. Walleyes are being caught on the humps in great numbers, and the only problem has been finding fish the right size to keep. Leeches and rigs or crawlers are best right now. Northern pike have been abundant in the new weedbeds, and anglers trolling Shad Raps in the evening have been catching nice pike and the occasional walleye.

Lake of the Woods: Anglers are having success catching walleyes by jigging in deep water (28 to 32 feet) on the south end mud as well as the reefs near Long Point and Garden Island. Walleyes are also being caught in 14 to 20 feet by jigging, drifting with spinners and trolling crankbaits near the Lighthouse gap and Morris Point gap. Many muskies are being caught, and the muskie fishing should only improve with the warmer weather. Northerns are heating up, with bigger fish coming from deeper water.

Ely area: The walleye bite has slowed recently but anglers are still pulling in some nice fish on area lakes. Walleyes have dropped down to their summer depths at around 20 feet. Fishing Rapalas and other crankbaits at that depth has been scoring fish, and some anglers have been taking walleyes up to 10 pounds on lakes such as Burntside, Shagawa and Birch. Big northerns have been going after large swim baits and spoons, and sunnies and crappies are taking small tube jigs and waxworms fished under a slip bobber in 3 to 10 feet of water.

Southeastern Minnesota: Fish in the rivers in this area are taking on a summer pattern, and smallmouth bass have been the most likely to bite. Fish are not yet taking topwater baits, and weeds are beginning to hamper dropping baits. Water temperatures are approaching the mid-70s, and smallmouths are post-spawn and moving to their summer lairs.
