The deadline for anglers to remove ice-fishing shelters from lakes is just around the corner.
For the southern two-thirds of the state, ice houses must be off lakes by midnight Friday, says the state Department of Natural Resources.
The deadline is March 15 for the northern third.
Friday's deadline applies to waters south of a line starting at the Minnesota-North Dakota border near Moorhead along Hwy. 10, then east along Hwy. 34 to Hwy. 200, east along Hwy. 200 to Hwy. 2, and east along Hwy. 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border near Duluth.
If shelters are not removed, owners can be prosecuted and the structures may be removed or destroyed by a conservation officer. Contents may be held for 60 days; if not claimed within that time, the items become property of the state.
After the deadlines, portable shelters may be used from one hour before sunrise to midnight, but only if there is an open fishing season on the lake.
