Almanac extra: Non-toxic shot for Iowa doves; RIM celebration Thursday

Hunters in Iowa will be able to hunt mourning doves this fall for the first time since 1918. The Legislature passed a law last spring legalizing a hunt, and the Iowa Natural Resources Commission approved final rules last week.

They did throw dove hunters one curveball: Only non-toxic shot will be allowed, whether hunting on private or public land.

Officials made that decision because much dove hunting occurs over a small area, which would increase the likelihood of lead concentrations.

"There will be a number of hunters who will be opposed to this decision, but at the end of the day, this action by the commission will help protect Iowa's environment and wildlife from the adverse affects of lead," DNR Director Roger Lande said in a release.

As in Minnesota, the season will begin Sept. 1.

RIM celebration

Due to the state shutdown, the RIM 25th Anniversary Celebration that was scheduled for Thursday near Owatonna has been postponed. A new date for the event will be set when the Board of Water and Soil Resources is fully operational after the shutdown has ended.

Since 1996, the state has appropriated nearly $170 million for 6,400 conservation easements totaling more than 230,000 acres of wetlands and grasslands. Officials say those lands help water quality and wildlife habitat and reduce flood damage. The state contribution has leveraged $260 million in federal dollars.
