For the first time, Minnesota duck hunters will be able to buy the federal duck stamp online or via phone. Minnesota and Wisconsin are among nine states participating in a three-year pilot program with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make it easier to buy the stamps.
The program will start about Sept. 5 in Minnesota. Customers can go online, or call the DNR's special licensing phone number, or go to any of the DNR's electronic licensing system outlets, to buy the $15 federal duck stamp required of waterfowl hunters. They'll get a receipt that will be accepted as proof of purchase for 45 days and will be able to legally hunt with it. The stamp will be mailed to you, and you'll need it after the 45-day receipt expires.
Of course, hunters can still just buy the actual stamp at many stores that sell hunting and fishing licenses and at many post offices. Don't forget to sign it.
State stamp changes
Also for the first time, Minnesota hunters this fall won't have to possess the state waterfowl stamp or the state pheasant stamp. Hunters of those species still must buy the stamp endorsements, which show up on their licenses, but they won't have to possess the actual stamps. However, the physical stamps are available for a $2 mailing fee.
