The quest to catch a fish in Minnesota has become rather trivial of late.
Yes, I know, life goes on, but floating the Mississippi for smallmouth isn't much of a topic when the daily news is about people dying in the same river.
Suddenly this summer, our cherished fishing water has become the site of death and destruction, the latest being trout streams in the southeast hill country.
Truth is, we lost more than lives and property when the rains came. As time goes by, the DNR might find that the southeast trout streams, themselves -- some of them -- also were lost.
While trout streams often benefit from occasional high water -- scouring the silt out of pools and rejuvenating fish habitat -- DNR this time might find the flooding eradicated trout populations and wreaked havoc with trout habitat.
For sure, nothing will be the same in Minnesota's beautiful hill country for a long time. This goes for the flooded communities, the trout streams and those of us who loved to be in their company.
