Now that Mille Lacs has new fish-keeping rules -- only walleyes 14 to 16 inches or one over 28 inches can be possessed -- what new look will walleye tournaments have for the rest of the angling season?

This might be a good time for tournament sponsors to experiment with a new way to determine who wins.

For example, instead of counting fish and weight, why not count inches? Very simply, the team with the most inches wins.

How do you prevent cheating by a tournament team? Good question. One answer might be digital photography. The fish must be photographed on a measuring board provided by the tournament and the photo is "measured" by tournament officials.

Yes, an inches tournament weigh-in becomes a non-event for spectators -- no big catches to ogle over -- but it might save fish. No longer will a team's catch spend hours in a boat livewell until weigh-in. Instead, the fish is photographed and promptly released, which should help survival rates.
