Common winter birds and what they eat

Cardinal: sunflowers, safflower peanuts, white millet, cracked corn

Purple finch: sunflower, safflower, suet, white millet, peanuts

Blue jay: whole corn, peanuts, suet, sunflowers

Chickadee: sunflower, safflower, suet, peanut butter,

White-breasted nuthatch: sunflower, safflower, suet, peanut

butter, pumpkin seeds

Woodpeckers: suet or suet mixtures, cracked corn

DID YOU KNOW?

• According to the National Bird Feeding Society, a typical backyard song bird doesn't weigh as much as two nickels.

• Winter birds consume about 15 percent of their body weight overnight just to maintain warmth.

• February is a winter bird's toughest month to survive.
