The trip

Last update: December 12, 2006 - 4:43 PM

• Sea ducks are hunted October through early January in Maine. The most common species hunted is the common eider. Longtails and some scoters also are available.

• Safety is a primary concern among sea duck hunters, who often must ply cold, rough waters to reach hunting areas.

• Maine also offers inland duck hunting. But visiting waterfowlers almost exclusively focus on sea ducks, which are big, beautiful and exciting to hunt.

• Outfitter was Eiders Down Inc., owned by Bill Pidgeon. Call 207-546-7167 or visit online at eidersdown.com.
