Deer opener: The view from around the state: mixed

Alexandria

According to Christopherson's Bait and Tackle, the first day of registrations in Douglas County is typically slow. By midafternoon about 20 deer had been registered.

Brainerd

By midafternoon registrations were running a little higher than last year, according to Weidell Hardware, which is 10 miles east of Brainerd on Hwy. 18. Among the 40 registrations was a 14-point buck.

Clear Lake

The turnout in Sherburne County was similar to last year, according to Briggs Lake General Store. As of midafternoon 18 deer had been registered, including a 10-pointer.

Cloquet

License sales on Thursday and Friday at Outdoor Advantage were an estimated 15 percent higher than last year, and by midafternoon Saturday 25 deer had been registered, including a 10-point buck and a couple of 200-pound does.

Cook

By late afternoon, the Country Store had only a few registrations but expected registrations to pick up after sunset. The turnout was about the same as last year.

Hibbing

A 10-point buck and two 8-point bucks were the biggest among the 14 deer registered during the afternoon at South Side Sinclair. The turnout was similar to last year's.

International Falls

According to Sportsman's Paradise, the turnout was a little ahead of last year. A 10-point, 186-pound buck was among the 16 that had been registered before 5 p.m.

Mantorville

Registrations were running a little higher compared to last year at Mantor Mart in Dodge County. About 20 bucks were among the 75 that had been registered by late afternoon.

Walker

Reed's Sporting Goods reported a pretty typical first day with about 10 registrations by late afternoon. Included in the 10 were a couple of 9-pointers.

Willmar

By late afternoon, it had been typically slow for J's Bait and Sports with just a few registrations. J's Bait and Sports expected the registrations to be a little down in the area this year compared to last year.

Winona

Turnout in southeast Minnesota was running a little heavier than last year, according to Mills Fleet Farm.

Worthington

About 25 deer had been registered as of late afternoon at Bob & Steve's Shell.
